Emmett Kenney’s road to being one of the top kickers in the Upper Midwest was not a straight one. He began his football career at wide receiver, but found he an aptitude towards kicking. As a freshman on Shanley’s football team he finally got his shot.
“It’s certainly nervewracking,I remember my first field goal, it was an incredible experience and I’ll never forget it. Made me realize I may have a future in the sport.” Kenney said.
That future is getting brighter by the day. Kenney had a great junior year for the Deacons, connecting on 8 of 12 field goals to go along with 23 extra points. But it’s one missed field goal that still bugs him from this past season.
“I can make this, I was in Coach Mattern’s ear the whole time. I wasn’t able to make it, but I know if I get that opportunity again I’ll make it.” Kenney said.
Now Kenney is aiming for a bigger goal. He’s started to receive attention from colleges. North Dakota State is interested along with some Power 5 schools like Kansas State. His Twitter videos have become necessary viewing to see how far Kenney can kick it.
“Just a simple twitter video gets 5-6 thousand views. Coaches are active on Twitter, I just need to keep improving.” Kenney added.
The goalposts of his future are in view. But even Kenney still can’t believe this has happened.
“I wanted to be a college basketball player in middle school, once I started seeing I had a future in kicking I started focusing on that, blessed to have opportunities right now.”
